Dir. Gianni Amelio
Italy/France/Switzerland, 1994, 116 mins
One of the best known films by Gianni Amelio, LAMERICA depicts migrants fleeing Albania to Italy and the human condition of the country, showing poverty, hopes and dreams, effects of dictatorship, and clear influences of other countries into Albania. This is one of the first cinematic depictions of mass migration to Italy, which makes headlines in the recent wave of migration from Africa and Middle East to Europe. The film screened in competition at the 1994 Venice Film Festival winning the Golden Osella for Best Director.
